iPod nano Lockup Reset When Frozen
My iPod nano locked up and I had no idea what to do. Holding down buttons wouldn’t turn it off. Toggling the hold switch didn’t do anything either. It was in a stuck state where hold was turned on and none of the buttons would respond.
If you own an iPod with the Click Wheel (iPod with video, nano, iPod photo, iPod, or mini) follow these steps to reset the iPod:
- Toggle hold switch on.
- Toggle hold switch off.
- Hold down the menu and middle button for a few seconds.
- You might need to repeat.
Both times my iPod nano has frozen up I was plugging the ipod into the USB cable while the the hold switch was toggled on. Make sure to hold switch is togged off when connecting your iPod with the USB cable.
To reset some of the earlier iPods including like the iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector), follow these steps:
- Toggle hold on.
- Toggle hold off.
- Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds.
- You might need to repeat.
To reset an iPod shuffle:
- Move the switch on the back of iPod shuffle to the off position (green stripe not visible).
- Wait 5 seconds.
- Move the switch on the back to the play in order or the shuffle position (green stripe visible).
Still having problems?
- Connect to a different USB or FireWire port on the computer.
- Install the latest Operating System upgrades.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall the iPod with iPod Updater
- Reinstall iTunes
- Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater.
*Restoring an iPod will erase all songs and files from the iPod, restoring it to the original state. Backup all files from the iPod before restoring it. Once restoration is complete, you can transfer your music and files from the computer back to your iPod again. - Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater.
iPod displays sad iPod icon
In most cases, the sad iPod icon indicates a hardware issue. If you are able to force iPod into Disk Mode, then it may not be a hardware issue, and you should try to restore your iPod with the latest software.

Without any action from me, my new Nano locked itself up in disk mode, displaying a check mark and stating it was “OK to disconnect.” No amount of button pushing invoked any reaction whatsoever. Your fix did the trick the first time, and I’m back to enjoying my playlists. Thanks so much!

the wheel was inactive, not because my hold button
was on.. really I checked. And now when I put him on

Thanks a ton. Your IPOD NANO LOCKUP or FREEZE solution worked Mine locked up just when plugging it into my USB port.
I have also noticed my computer will lockup on reboot if my nano is plugged into the usb port. I have not found anything about this so figure its my usb bus.
Your computer might be locking up on reboot with the nano plugged in if your computer has the capability to boot from a USB device. What it is trying to do is boot off of the iPod nano instead of from your hard drive.

i bough my iPod a while ago, and heard some fishy things going on with them, but nothing like this. the ipod hadn’t been off for more then 24 hrs. and i got to charge it. bam, nothing happens. back light still on, and a frozen screen is what i get. draining my battery for a goot 10 minutes(and as you know, with a nano, thats a good chunk of batt. life)i finally went online for search and resQ. this was the first thing that came up, and i managed to see the “hold menu and center button to re-boot. that pretty much saved my ass.

Mine has frozen whilst on pause, the reset does not work – even really slowly, and my PC doesn’t “see” it at all, so I cannot do the full wipe – any other bright ideas folks?

Update for locked Nano:
The instructions in my Nano says, “Toggle the Hold switch (set it to Hold and then turn it off again). Press the Menu and Center buttons at the same time for about 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.”
I did this while it was NOT plugged into the computer (not sure if it makes a difference or not) and it was NOT on a flat surface.

I found out about the restarst thing and it worked but then it stoped working for me. When i actually got it to unfreeze and play it would last about one song then it would freeze. and now the reseting doenst work at all i might just take mine back to circuit city, where i got it the first time and get one at the apple store bcuz someone told me that they work better from there and i could get extra help if i needed it.

I tried it the once and I thought it would work right away but after doing it about 4 times it worked…I was very close to crying and seeing my money go down the drain. I have a 2gb and it froze because i forgot it was on hold.

I use a Monster FM Wireless adapter to play my nano in the car…In the process of unhooking it and hooking it back up the nano appears to be locked up. It will not power up, unless I plug in the Monster adapter—When I powered it up, I tried the reset Fix as explained above but could not get it to work. When it powers up, there is a Pad Lock next to the pause sign. Any ideas would be appreciated.

This iPod nano sucks! I’ve got mine just 2 months ago and it already looks like 2 years old, so scratched it is. The black ones show the scratches a lot more than the white ones. I can’t believe Apple released a product that would scratch so much.

Thanks for the info, I was pissed but using your technique, I got it to fire up again. I have a pioneer Ip-ib100 pioneer’s car audio adapter to connect it to my stereo and I connected it to the stereo without realizing that I had the hold button on when I did so. So when I went to disconnect the ipod, the pioneer logo would not leave the screen and the radio would not respond. Maybe this info will help someone who is in the same boat as I was. DO NOT CONNECT THE IPOD TO YOUR CAR STEREO ADAPTER WITH THE HOLD BUTTON ON, IF YOU DO IT WILL PORBABLY FREEZE UP.
If only I new this trick in the first place I would have not returned my first and second one Im on my 3rd! The Apple store does not even know how to reboot it every time I returned it! So man ,Thanks you saved me from going to anger managment!!lol

Thanks a ton. Mine froze when I connect it to USB plug-in charger and I thought I had fried the electronics inside. I was almost panicking when I searched Google. This trick rocks. Seems to be similar to Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence except that Apple did not make it public. Their support site really needs some redesign, you can not find a topic there.

I gave my best friend a brand new nano today for the christmas present he had wanted for so long… Dead! reset would not work… nothing! menu and select 6 seconds, 10 seconds, more nada than nano! This actually is written in the nano’s manual , or atleast it is in the one my cousin got today. I’d still rather google than read a manual though

Thanks for the fix. Nano locked up on connection to my Xbox360 when it was paused on a DRM’d aac. Note to the massess on that front.
Another thing to keep in mind guys is that when you plug sensitive electronics into your computer…you need to remember…when connecting a device…computer first device second…and when disconnecting it’s the same thing….computer first device second…this will avoid any static discharge from unshielded cables

oh happy days kevla i still have many of there limbs locked away safely in my cupboard under the stairs for a rainy day. we will have to do it again sometime, is it possible that this website has a shop somewere that we may visit and parade small children through there workplace smashing all the silly ipods that tear children away from our gaping arms. if i was powerful enough i wud kill mr ipod an stop the ipod monster from taking my babies away from me. but only time will tell if we can manage this anyway i jus want to say if u have an ipod mini i will eat ur brain

My new nano doesn`t work!! I tried to load some tunes and all seemed to be going well… It`s right out of the box! At first it was stuck in disk mode so I tried to reset it. i was so bummed!!! i almost thought i had to buy a new one!

I turned my nano on today to listen to some music, next thing it popped up with a message saying “Disk Mode – OK to disconnect”. The problem is that its not plugged into anything anyway, its just frozen like that. I’ve tried the reset method but no luck, please can you assist me ??? It was a gift for Xmas from my G/f, she’ll kill me!

My nano which I received for Christmas will not turn off or go insto sleep mode. I called Apple support and went through resetting and restoring several times. I still have the same problem. I am also getting a message about Firewire not being supported for downloading of songs. I have never connected via firwire. I only use USB. Apple has asked me to return the unit. I’m wondering if they have a manufacturing problem??

i had software issue with nano. after i played with speed normal/fast when an audiobook was playing, i got stuck with speed normal on menu all the times. when i pressed the middle button, it switched between speed normal (a few times per cycle) and audiobook picture. doing a hard reset solved this problem.

My ipod nano has a padlock on the top left hand side of my screen and the padlock wont turn off , even if i toggle the hold switch it doesnt work . When i connect it to the computer it says the normal please do not disconnect but the padlock is still there and it wont let me pick a song , look at my pictures or have any activity with my ipod !! it also doesnt turn on ! we have tried a lot of solutions and none have worked !! OK I had my ipod nano and it was workin fine then when I tried to delete some songs from the itunes all my songs were gone from my ipod there was nothing on there so the next day I went and got a new one and I did everything I did before except set up a account because I thought since you already had one why do you have to make a new one so I plugged in my ipod and it still didn’t work so I set up a new account and plugged it in and it still didn’t work now I don’t know what to do. Should I just go buy a new one and try over again or find some way to fix it and quick!

Thanks for the tip, nano features guide only had to toggle the reset button on and off and hold down the center button for 6 seconds but not as you suggested to hold down the center button and the menu button. This cleared up my nano.

my ipod was working perfectly fine, then i plugged it into the computer to get more songs on, left it in for a little to charge, and now it wont shut off. whenever i hold down the play button for it to shut off, the lights go out, but once i take my finger off the button, the lights go back on again. i reset my ipod but its still not working.. any ideas?

The Hold is on the top of the Nano. The little slider switch. To “toggle” it means to switch it either on or switch it off.

I’m not sure what your line 1 and 2 does. But it seems to me nano should be on for your line 3 to work. Hmm?
1. The nano doesn’t have an on off switch.
2. press and hold the “arrow pointing to the 11 thinging” for 2 seconds. Maybe longer.
3. Do line two again.
4. Hold down the menu and middle button untill you see an apple on the screen.
5. Yea! It seems to be working again.
The instructions don’t say anywhere it has an on/off switch. It’s the hold switch at the top of the nano that you need to toggle on and off.

ummm but my hold is locked on on the screen so the buttons arn’t working, I can toggle the hold swithc all day long and stays locked. toggled on, off and held down buttons but since it thinks the hold is stuck on the buttons do nothing……………….

my nano is completey locked up. I don’t knwo why or how I did it. I cannot do anything. I have charge the battery but still no change. Can anyone help please?

A million thanks… this is the second time it’d happened to me. The first time, the battery was pretty low, so I just let it drain out, and it reset itself that way. This time, it was fully charged. Yours was the first thing that came up on Google when I typed in “iPod Nano” “locked up” — it’s a miracle, I tell ya….

i tried this and it didnt work! i held the center and menu button but it was still frozen and the only way to turn it off was to turn the hold on and then off… wtf is the problem here!

I have a nano ….on the top of the display there is a lock…..I can not do anything with the nano….I have downloaded the updater to reset it…. but the lock remains on the screen even after it has been reset….. I found the hidden file when you view the nano through my computer….. I did not find a file that related to the locked status…. so I deleted what I could and reset it, but the lock remains………help!!!!!

Nano is locked. Same issues. Hard reset doesn’t work (toggle on off and press menu and select buttons). Any other ideas.

My stupid nano wouldn’t turn on — when I plugged it into the USB port, nothing happened — it is 7 months old, so I figured the battery wasn’t dead yet (as it was just working fine) … iTunes seems to have screwed it up — I follow the advive above and rebooted the nano, and it seems to have fixed it — thanks for posting it!

i love you i was about to be DJiny for a party and i was asembling the playlist and it froze your a life saver.
I have had my iPOD nano for a month and now it won’t turn off and is stuck in the charging mode (even when it is not connected to anything it says it is charging). It plays songs but it started to skip and the battery lights with a lightening bolt flahes constantly. Resetting did not help (I’ve tried it about a dozen times). I also let the battery run down then put it on the charger and tried restting it again; no joy. Can you help?
my ipod as frozen in disk mode and i have followed oter instrctions which say 2 eject it on the itunes but no hope. Is there any othe ay i can get out of this disk mode and get back listening 2 my music?????

Last time I had to completely delete my IPOD & update it again, this is much easier! Although it is minor, I thought I’d suggest adding this verbiage to your ‘toggle’ steps, (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) … some people won’t know which position of ‘hold’ is on or off. The on position is the position where the button is closest to the word ‘hold’ …

The trick worked thank goodness. I already exchanged mine 2 times because it froze and they had NO IDEA what to do.. BUT this time it used all my battery when i did that trick. Great help, I jsut bought my iPod after having charged it and put it in pocket to retreive later I found it locked up. Found this site after a few searches and your post fixed my ipod on the first try.

My daughter’s ipod nano display just frozen.
I have been asking her what she have done to her new 4G red ipod nano.
She was worried and desperate to look for the solution.
After figuring with ipod nano switches to no avail,

I chance upon your site and saw the step to unlock the frozen display,

thanks so much. Went in to buy a cheapie mp3 player, came out w/ an ipod nano. charged, added songs from itunes sw and played a few. next morning at the gym, this was locked up. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!! Google and your site helped me unstick this ipod. I have absolutely no confidence in the quality of Apple. This will be my last purchase of apple hardware, I may even return it within my 30 days. At least I have it working now.

Hey, thank you very,very,very much! My iPOD nano started to behave weird: it started, the wheel works and the clicker also clicks, but there is no sound in the earphones, so I held the center key and the menu key for a few seconds, than the Apple’s logo appeared on black background and after few more seconds the sound came back. Thank you!

I have had to reset about 5 times and your system works perfectly. I have updated software but notice that when I am connected to the USB cable the “Do not discoonect warning on the Nano never goes out” Is this normal and part of the same problem. It would seem to me that once the unit is fully charged the “Do Not Disconnect” warning should go out.
well my 4GB i-pod froze on me as well…thanks for the info…i also read a few other websites and holding the center button on the wheel didn’t do anything. HOlding the center button and the Menu button is how i was able to unfreeze the ipod in just a few seconds. Back to listening to my musik

OK, so my the hold switch to my Ipod mini got stuck and i couldnt even turn my ipod on. I searched all over and couldn’t find out how to fix it so i just tried myself. If you have this problem hears what you do: Get a guitar pick and slid it between the colored caseing and the top white part (the part with the hold switch) Carefully take this part off. You will see what looks like a little orange nub inside that you can push back in forth. Push it back the other way and put the white part back on. The only thing is that the hold switch no longer works but at least you can use your ipod!
