An Automattic 6+ Months
Leaving my old job at SVSU to work for Automattic has been great. I haven’t had a single regret with my decision. The company has changed a lot in the short time I’ve been there. The number of Automatticians has grown from less than 20 to over 30. We acquired BuddyPress and IntenseDebate. (...)

Heading to Las Vegas for Blog World Expo
Tomorrow afternoon I’m flying out to Las Vegas to work the WordPress / Woopra / Layered Tech booth at the Blog World Expo. It’ll be my first time traveling to an event as an Automattic employee, so I’m excited. It looks like a lot of great companies will be there to represent and there will be bloggers everywhere. Heather and Jane will also be working our booth. (...)

From SVSU to Automattic
I started attending Saginaw Valley State University in 1998. A year and a half later, I got a job in the IT Services Support Center as a Student Technician. In 2002 I was hired as a Help Desk Analyst and graduated with my Bachelor’s a few months later. A little over a year ago I took a job as Microlab Technology Specialist. After nearly 10 years, Wednesday was my last day working for SVSU. (...)

First Post of 2007
Wow, three months without a single post on the blog. That kind of sucks. I’ve had plenty of material to write about. Looking back through my calendar, here are a few highlights… January 5 — Bought a house. January 7-12 — Attended MacWorld in San Francisco, CA. Rest of January — Cleaning, removing wallpaper, painting, and moving. (...)

Ahhhh
Where to start? It’s been nearly a month since the last post here at MtDewVirus. That has to be a record since the blog started over two years ago. The lack of posts hasn’t been because of a lack of activity, because plenty has been going on in my life and the world around me. I simply needed some time away from blogging. (...)
Out of Office
Just looking at the calendar I counted out of the next 21 weekdays I’ll only be at work for 7.5 of them. I love this time of year! Our holiday break starts at noon on December 22nd and we’re back to work on January 3rd. On the 8th of January I fly out to San Francisco for MacWorld and will return on the 14th after a nice 7 hour layover in Las Vegas. (...)

I’ll be attending Macworld the 2nd week of January with Dave. I’ve been helping out with Mac support at work and this will be my training for the year. I’ve wanted to check out San Fran for quite some time, so I’m excited to go. Hopefully I don’t come home as a switcher, because I hate to say it, but I love Windows. I can’t wait to see what SF has to offer. (...)

If You Had All of the Money in the World
If you had all of the money in the world what would you do? Before you answer, understand it’s not a question about money. The average person must work 40 hours a week to make ends meet. If you had all of the money in the world you wouldn’t have to work that much. You could do whatever you wanted. So what would you do? (...)

Endless Time Off
After using 64 hours of vacation in August I still have 169 hours left and 48 sick days. Sick days work on a yearly basis and renew with the fiscal year each July 1st. We build vacation time at 15 hours a month up to a maximum of 275 hours. (...)

Refreshed
I was out of town for a long weekend and I’ve been very busy since I came back, so that’s why I haven’t posted in a week or so. Last weekend was the 2005 Nautical Festival (”Naughty Fest”) in my hometown of Rogers City, MI. It’s always a blast and this year was no exception. I had more fun over those couple of days than I’ve had in a long time. (...)

I Code
Today was the first day in a long time that I didn’t want to leave work at 4:30. I’ve been coding a program for the past week and because of the short work day I didn’t get time to work on it until almost 4:00. I was just getting into the zone and found out where my bug was when a co-worker mentioned it was time to go home. Time flies when you’re doing what you like. (...)

The 2nd Time Around
Today I passed Microsoft Exam 70-306, which I had failed the first time. Just barely though. My score was a 725, only 25 more than the required 700. I guess a passing score is a passing score, so it doesn’t really matter. (...)

I was cramming all night. Finally decided to get a little sleep at 6:30 AM and woke up again at 8 to study some more and get ready for the tests. 1.5 hours of sleep…not bad! A Busy Week Means A Quiet Week
Just a warning that I have a very busy week ahead. On Friday I’m taking a couple of Microsoft certification tests, so all of my free time will be spent studying. The power went out in my house at some point yesterday so when I got home from work all of the clocks were blinking and my computer was off. Not a big deal. Right? Wrong! Workin’ It
Today was one of the best days at work that I’ve had in a long time. It flew by because of this, so that was an added bonus. HEAT is our call logging system, which communicates with an SQL server as the back-end. (...)

I haven’t posted much lately about what I’ve been up to, so here it is… As you can probably tell I’ve spent a lot of time over the past 5 days working on the site. Failed
I failed my Micosoft certification test today. I took exam 070-305, which is for Visual Basic.NET with ASP.Net. The class I took through HOTT was a great class, but I’m not buying into their guarantee: HOTT guarantees that students will pass related certification exams, or HOTT will pay for a retake. Well over half of the questions on the test were not on things covered in the class. (...)

Vacations Are Nice, But…
A vacation from work and normal life is always a nice thing. It helps to clear the mind and gives you time re-focus on things.
